Meetings with our authors: Aliya Bolatkhan
Aliya Bolatkhan, a doctoral student at the University of Zurich, conducted fieldwork in the Zhetysu region as part of a research trip. After completing her trip, Aliya Bolatkhan kindly agreed to meet with Dr. Qanat Uskenbay, Associate Professor, Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal "Qazaq Historical Review," Director of the Institute for Humanities Studies ABDI.
Aliya Bolatkhan regularly publishes articles in the academic journal "Qazaq Historical Review" and is a friend and ambassador for the journal. Her articles "Selective Favoritism and Confirmed "Sovietiness" among Kalmyk Special Settlers within the Qazaq SSR" (DOI: https://doi.org/10.69567/3007-0236.2023.3.308.330), published in the third issue of the journal for 2023, and "Mislabeling Tradition: Ethnographic Knowledge Production in the Qazaq SSR and Cultural Representation" (DOI: https://doi.org/10.69567/3007-0236.2024.2.104.133), published in the second issue for 2024, have received positive reviews from domestic and international researchers. These articles, written on the basis of extensive documentary and historiographic material, attract attention not only for the novelty of the material, but also for the formulation of the problem, which is rare for Qazaq historiography, and the validity of the methodological base. During the meeting, Aliya Bolatkhan and Dr. Qanat Uskenbay discussed further prospects for cooperation, agreed on the publication of new research and its topics. The author's work on the traditional food culture of the Turkic peoples of the former Soviet Union and the characteristics of "knowledge production" in Soviet historiography is being prepared for publication in the next issue of the academic journal "Qazaq Historical Review."
Aliya Bolatkhan is a doctoral candidate at the University of Zurich, studying the gastronomy of Taldyqorgan as a lens for exploring local food culture. Her academic interests focus on the bakery and confectionery sector, restaurants, cafes, canteens, and home cooking practices.
